Description
Haleakala or the East Maui Volcano, is a massive shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the Hawaiian Island of Maui. The western 25% of the island is formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, also referred to as the West Maui Mountains.
The tallest peak of Haleakala ("house of the sun"), at 10,023 feet (3,055 m), is Puʻu ʻUlaʻula (Red Hill). From the summit one looks down into a massive depression some 7 miles across, 2 miles wide, and nearly 2,600 feet deep. The surrounding walls are steep and the interior mostly barren-looking with a scattering of volcanic cones.
The view from the top of the volcano is incredible. It's a barren yet beautiful landscape that looks like it could be from another planet. I created this panorama from 84 different photos I took, combining, blending, and carefully matching up the best images.
We took the Holland America cruise ship, Noordam for a 34 day Pacific Ocean crossing from San Diego, California to Australia. This trip, in which we stayed extra time in Australia, produced over 6,500 photographs. Only the best ones have been uploaded here for your enjoyment and for purchase.
