Description
In September and October, the elk go into rut and the males vie for supremacy to gather a harem of females. This mating ritual is evident to visitors to the Cataloochee Valley in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. I am a lifetime member of the "Friends of the Smokies" which supports the park and all its functions.
I visited the park with my Canon 7D Mark II camera and a huge, 400mm f/2.8 lens to safely capture photos from more than 100 yards away. Elk bulls will charge any perceived threat so it is best to stay far back.
This bull (10 point rack) was in a depression a distance away and the late day (Golden Hour) sun lit the grass in the foreground in a fiery yellow-orange. It made for a gorgeous photo but is even better in this creative application of sketching and painting.
Haldane Creative Art includes wonderful digital photography as well as digital manipulations in Photoshop by John Haldane of Asheville, North Carolina.
