Description
Riding through the throngs, sun beating on my back, I heard the voices in my head cry "Turn back! Turn Back!"
Hesitation was brief and I pressed forward, fearful but determined. My eyes steadied and focussed towards the horizon.I plowed on towards the goal that seemed to stay just out of sight.
Time compressed. Days and nights blended into grays. Still I moved forward, eyes straight ahead, searching.
After a time, I noticed the grays were getting darker; ever so gradually, but definitely darker. Perhaps I was getting closer. Anxiously, I pressed forward, more determined than ever.
Finally, I reached a vast chessboard, stretching towards a vanishing point on the still elusive horizon. On either side were walls of glass, dark and difficult to see. I moved closer to one and saw an old man behind the glass.
"Old man," I asked, "where am I?"
"You are where you have been headed all these years," he replied.
"I have traveled long and hard to get here," I continued. "I must know the answers I seek."
"Ask," he said.
"Who are you? What is life? What lies ahead?"
The old man answered solemnly, "You do not recognize me?"
"No," I wondered, "should I?"
"I am you; your reflection. Life is what you have passed through; you didn't miss it did you?"
"As for what lies ahead, you see the chessboard?"
"Yes," I answered, still stunned and confused by his answers.
"It is empty," he said. "Game over."

A pawn on a chessboard,
A false move by God will now destroy me,
But wait, on the horizon,
A new dawn seems to be rising,
Never to recall this passerby, born to die.
