Sunset on Mount Mitchell. Mt. Mitchell is the highest peak East of the Mississippi River. This shot, near sunset in March 2012, shows why the Blue Ridge Mountains have that name. Mt. Mitchell is also the namesake and centerpiece of the 1,946-acre Mount Mitchell State Park, located 33 miles north of Asheville off the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile marker #355.
