My work starts with a photo and from there I create new pieces. Using masking tools, I separated the fisherman from the background which was very distracting. The "water" is actually a rock I photographed and colored. The moon I shot from my yard a few months ago.
Each part is its own layer. Then I combined the layers and added dodging to create the moon reflecting in the water and burning to shadow the fisherman. Finally, I painted the image digitally.

The work that went into the creation of this is impressive. I love the moon... and he rock really does look like water... I had to read the description to understand this.. Brilliant, John. No wonder it received so much attention against stiff competition. F/L
