The National Pastime
Baseball, hot dogs, a frothy glass of beer
April through October, my favorite time of year
The crack of wood against the leather
Sunny days and Summer weather
Crowds are roaring, standing, clapping
Letting out a cheer!
Baseball, hotdogs, apple pie and Mum
Yelling at the ump, calling him a bum
Stealing bases, double plays
Things you don’t see every day
Playing hooky, skipping school
Chewing wads of gum
Baseball isn’t just a game
The National Pastime is a flame
Igniting hearts of men and boys
Unlike any other joys
Gloves and bats and balls and such
Dreaming of great fame
When the boys of Summer come
And Summer songs we start to hum
We remember Mays and Ruth
And honestly, to tell the truth
I practically go numb
I cannot wait to hit the ball
And watch it sail o’er the wall
Or catch it in my special glove
This is the game that I love
I hear it call
